Founded in 1982, the Illinois Drug Education Alliance is an effective grassroots force against alcohol and other drug use in Illinois.

IDEA is a statewide, volunteer coalition of individuals dedicated to the goals of drug-free youth and the prevention of illegal, destructive, unsafe or unhealthy use of alcohol and other drugs. Alcohol is an illegal drug for those under 21.

The principle objective of IDEA is to involve all segments of Illinois society in the process of prevention. IDEA's focus is to reach parent, student, school and community prevention groups with the lastest research and information on effective prevention. IDEA is also affiliated with national networks and therefore is able to quickly disseminate information.

What does IDEA do?

• IDEA provides guidance and leadership to parents, youth, school and community groups who are working in prevention and acts as a statewide, independent citizens' advocate for effective prevention efforts.
• IDEA promotes the prevention of drug and alcohol related problems through education, communication and networking.
• IDEA publishes The Best of IDEA, an informative publication on prevention issues.
• IDEA hosts an annual state-wide Drug Prevention Conference every November for youth and adults. The conference is a premier showcase for the lastest drug prevention and networking information in Illinois.
• IDEA sponsors the annual Red Ribbon Campaign each October. The Red Ribbon Campaign offers an opportunity for community involvement and commitment to a drug-free America.
• IDEA sponsors Alcohol Awareness Month in April, a national campaign that brings attention to the number one youth drug of choice, alcohol.
• IDEA sponsors a state-wide Youth Board of young people who are committed to leading drug-free lives. The board takes an active role in advancing the drug-free message and are role models in their respective communities.
